8 Things You Can Do to Prevent Chronic Kidney Disease

Managing your kidneys’ health and longevity to prevent chronic kidney disease (CKD) is crucial. Although not all cases of kidney disease are preventable, with the right support, avoiding and managing CKD doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.

If you have a kidney condition, high-risk factors for developing one, or just want to ensure your long-term renal health, NephroCareMD is here for you. After a full kidney health assessment, Chadi Saad, MD, a double board-certified nephrologist and internist, and his team create a personalized plan through our comprehensive kidney care approach.

In addition to our medical services, we provide our guidance and expertise to help you through your kidney health journey. Many lifestyle practices contributing to your overall health also directly benefit your kidneys. Here are some simple tips that you can start incorporating today.

1. Manage blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight

The two leading causes of chronic kidney disease are type 2 diabetes and hypertension. The good news is that preventing and treating these conditions — like managing your blood pressure, body mass, and blood sugar regulation — also helps prevent kidney damage.

2. Eat a healthy, balanced diet

A balanced diet that prioritizes whole foods does wonders for your overall health and kidneys. Make sure your diet contains plenty of nutrient-dense food choices like fruit, vegetables, and lean proteins.

Aim to keep high-sodium and processed foods to a minimum to reduce the strain on your kidneys and regulate blood pressure. And, of course, stay hydrated — 8 cups or 64 ounces of water daily is a great place to start.

3. Stay active

A consistent exercise routine helps your kidneys by regulating blood sugar and blood pressure, improving circulation, and aiding in weight management.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following weekly exercise guidelines for adults: at least 150 minutes of moderate cardiovascular activity and two days of full-body strength training.

4. Quit smoking

It probably isn’t news to you that smoking is unhealthy. However, it can be particularly problematic if you want to avoid CKD. Damaged blood vessels from smoking impair healthy blood flow to your kidneys and increase your likelihood of developing disease.

5. Limit alcohol intake

Excessive alcohol intake is linked to high blood pressure and dehydration, which can harm your kidneys over time.

However, if you decide to keep drinking, avoid heavy drinking and follow these moderate-drinking guidelines:

  • Women shouldn’t exceed seven drinks per week or three drinks daily
  • Men shouldn’t exceed 14 drinks per week or four drinks daily

6. Reduce stress

If you or someone you know is coping with a chronic health condition, you know what a toll it can take on your mental health. Frustratingly, increased stress also contributes to the development and progression of chronic illness. A 2021 study found that stress may worsen chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury.

To keep stress at bay, get 7-9 hours of sleep each night, exercise regularly, and consider introducing mind-body wellness methods like yoga, breathwork, and mental health counseling.

7. Carefully manage medications

It’s paramount to tell us about any prescription or over-the-counter medications you take regularly. Many common medications can interfere with kidney treatments and injure your kidneys when misused. Only use prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal remedies under our guidance and the recommendation of your primary care provider.

8. Get regular checkups

Regular testing and complete kidney health care will bring you peace of mind.
